My socks let me down
The second game into the season of my Over-30 Indoor soccer league I forgot my socks. Shinguards don’t stay up without socks, so I bought a new pair of argyle soccer socks: black and white squares. So 80’s, but what the heck, they were only $4.99. For the next seven games we went undefeated, and my three other pair of soccer socks I had at home never saw the light of day.
It’s all about the superstition. New socks: 7-0.
My socks took us to the semi-finals, which we won 7-0. Our team watched the other semi-final game supremely confident that we were going to take the league championship.
How quickly our dreams can be shattered. How quickly my socks let me down. We got off to a quick start, scoring the first goal, but then Gonzo, the only team we lost to, kicked our behinds. It was JV vs. Varsity, and I was a like a freshman between the pipes. Or it could have been that we were older than the other Over 3o players on the other team and we just ran out of gas.
Either way, it was a lousy way to end such a great season. However, the beauty of adult rec sports is that the new season is just one week away. Time for a new start and a new pair of socks.
